Fisheries and Oceans Canada: Canadian Marine DNA Library Website

Project Overview:

KIMBO Design was entrusted by Fisheries and Oceans Canada to design and develop a website for the Canadian Marine DNA Library (CaMDL), a cutting-edge resource aimed at cataloging mitochondrial DNA sequences for environmental DNA (eDNA) applications. This initiative, a collaboration between the Hakai Institute and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, strives to establish a comprehensive and enduring genetic data repository that will support eDNA applications across Canada.

The Challenge:

One of the key challenges faced during the development of the Canadian Marine DNA Library (CaMDL) website was managing the vast amount of data the platform needed to house and present. As the database grew in size and complexity, ensuring that users could easily find, filter, and access relevant data became increasingly difficult.

To address this, we implemented advanced filtering and search functionalities, as well as a robust information architecture, to streamline the browsing process. Despite these advancements, maintaining the balance between a comprehensive database and a user-friendly interface remained a constant challenge, requiring ongoing testing and optimization to ensure that researchers could access the data they needed without feeling overwhelmed.

The Strategy:

To create an effective platform for the Canadian Marine DNA Library (CaMDL), we employed a structured approach centered on user needs and functionality. Starting with a sitemap tailored to client requirements, we tested and refined the structure to ensure optimal usability and clarity. A detailed information architecture informed the intuitive design layout, enabling users to access data with minimal effort. We established a cohesive branded identity, including a text logo and color palette that embody the library’s commitment to scientific precision and environmental stewardship.

High-fidelity wireframes were developed to align the visual design with the site’s purpose, enhancing the overall user experience. Finally, we implemented custom development with advanced features, such as optimized filters, to streamline navigation and data searches.

Results

KIMBO has designed an intuitive and user-friendly interface for the Canadian Marine DNA Library (CaMDL), enabling users to seamlessly search, filter, and soon upload data, thereby enhancing the database’s functionality. The revamped website features cohesive branding with a new logo and color palette that reflect the scientific and environmental mission of the library.

With a refined, user-focused design and advanced filtering capabilities, the platform supports a seamless user experience, allowing researchers to efficiently browse and discover data. This vital digital resource empowers marine researchers across Canada, facilitating access to an extensive DNA database that supports marine research and conservation efforts.
